I’ve just returned from a whirlwind trip to my old stomping grounds (affectionately referred to as Stepford), and I’ve decided that a conversation with a dear friend (you can go home again when you have awesome friends like this one) will inform my mindset going forward.

Historically, there was no problem the two of us could not solve, always with great hilarity, over an Italian dinner and a carafe of wine. Despite a physical separation of three years, it was obvious in moments that this was still the case. In discussing one of my relationships, I shared that certain events had led to a fundamental shift in my perspective:  instead of thinking of the relationship in terms of what it wasn’t, I began to think of it in terms of what it was. I also mentioned how that simple change resulted in a dramatic increase in my happiness and peace, which in turn enhanced the relationship.

My friend’s eyes lit up and she nodded her head. We discussed how easy it is to do the opposite; how ingrained it can become. Several times throughout that long evening, she returned to the concept, declaring it simple but profound and resolving to incorporate it into her life. Days later, now that I’ve recovered from the surprise of someone finding my rantings personally helpful, I’ve decided that this practice of looking at what something is rather than what it isn’t can be applied to almost every aspect of my life.

While this attitude is related to positive thinking, or gratitude, or the discovery of silver linings I so love to espouse, I believe it takes things a step further. Or maybe it is a necessary first step. You can’t be grateful if you’re not clear about exactly what you have.

So I will be rejoicing in my beautiful little sanctuary, in my vibrant good health, in a few close and loyal friendships. I will continue to celebrate every victory of the Celtic Warrior Princess and to revel in her success on her terms. I will cherish my eccentric family. And I will keep working on that book.

Tell me what is in your life?
